Helping students become effective communicators

Elementary Connections:

At OCSI we want your children to become effective communicators, including being effective writers. Through the Writer’s Workshop program, your child is encouraged to write on a variety of topics and in a variety of genres. Writing can help your child discover new things, reflect on their experiences, and teach others a new skill or idea. Here are some of the ways the teachers here at OCSI are helping your children become better writers:

“In Pre-K, students draw and write in notebooks. They are practicing their pre-writing skills. Parents can help at home by providing time with playdough to strengthen fine motor skills to prepare for future writing activities. In PreK we start helping our children the proper way of holding the pencil. Figuring out if the student is left or right handed.
We do appreciate parents’ support at home. In your child’s free time please give them a crayon or pencil and a paper to write, draw etc. It is also great if you as parent could spend time with your child. Make it a fun or game type of writing or drawing with your child. Not just giving your child a crayon and a paper.” — Mrs. Pallmann

“In Kindergarten, many of my students like to draw pictures, and I always encourage them to write something about their pictures. Most of them can tell what they drew but are hesitant to write. So, we start by just labeling their pictures and hoping they will become comfortable writing something about their pictures soon. Parents at home can integrate technology and mobile devices to motivate their students to write. Perhaps do a selfie adventure with their students and then use the pictures to encourage them to write something about their adventure. They can also take selfies of their favorite books, pets, or places they have been. With helpful prompts, I believe students will have fun writing!” — Mrs. Ikehara

“In 1st grade we have just completed our ‘how to’ writing unit! We have learned all about how to use “time” words and tell things in sequential order. We are moving into a short letter writing unit and will even be writing to first graders in Singapore! Parents may want to help their children by writing notes or letters to their child at home. They may also want to help their children write to someone who lives far away and go to the post office together to mail the letter!” — Mrs. Fox

“In 5th grade we become better writers by becoming better readers and then by writing what we read about. This quarter we read biographies and the students created posters and gave presentations on their findings. This was great for understanding informational texts and looking at historical figures through the different lenses of the authors the students read.” — Mr. Doerksen

Thank you for giving us the privilege in 2019 of assisting you with the education of your child(ren). At OCSI, we want to help your child(ren) learn, reach their potential, and live for Jesus. We are excited to see

  • Pre-K students blossoming in their creative expression.
  • Kindergarten mathematician learning addition using objects and counters.
  • Second grade actors using their speaking skills as they performed a nativity play for their parents.
  • Third graders looking at maps and documents to figure out mysteries in social studies.
  • Fourth and fifth grade linguists learning stroke, stroke order, and number of strokes for writing in Japanese.
  • Elementary musicians learning that there is no H in the musical alphabet and that A comes after G.
  • Sixth grade Bible scholars studying the price Jesus paid in the crucifixion.
  • Seventh grade scientists making their own ecospheres and 7th grade artists using 1-point perspective to draw their dream rooms.

What do you love about the Christmas season?

What do you love about the Christmas season? For me, I love the extra time with family and friends, yummy food, and singing Christmas songs to celebrate the birth of Jesus at church. Elementary students have been preparing for Christmas through special activities and music performances. Here’s a few ways that OCSI students celebrated the Christmas season…

  • Pre-K students used a nativity scene in the dramatic play center to retell the Christmas story.
  • Kindergarten students practiced their Christmas music and made wreaths and angels.
  • 2nd grade students wrote about how they could light up the world with kindness.
  • 2nd grade students wrote and drew the gifts they hope are in their stocking.
  • Art students created original Christmas cards to share with friends and family.
  • 4th grade students counted down the days to Christmas with an advent calendar and took turns adding parts of the manger scene to share the story of Jesus’ birth each day.
  • 3rd and 5th grade students made original ornaments to decorate the classroom and to give as gifts.

  • Kindergarteners have increased their reading skills.
  • Second graders have increased their understanding of map, globes, and how to give directions using north, south, east, and west.
  • Fifth grade mathematicians focused on factorization and exponents.
  • Seventh grade scientists learned how food molecules travel through the body.
  • Ninth grade historians deepened their understanding of the role of law in society.
  • Eleventh grade writers demonstrated their understanding of The Screwtape Letters, satire, human nature, and letter organization by writing a new Screwtape letter satirizing a flaw in human nature that they see at school.
  • Twelfth graders studied how calorie intake affects body composition.

Holiday Market

Students develop skills related to creating

Elementary Connections:

The ability to create new ideas and philosophies, design and revise products, and think critically to find solutions to real world problems is what makes us as humans so uniquely and wonderfully created by God. In the changing world economy, these same skills are also increasingly in demand by employers. At OCSI, we start helping children develop these skills from a very young age:

  • IMG_1002Children are working together to figure out how far to move a box from a ramp in order to have their match box cars land in the box and how to reinforce bridges on train tracks with blocks (PreK).
  • Children created their own version of the famous pigeon book series and entitled it “Don’t Let the Pigeon Be the Teacher” (1st grade writing).
  • Children created mini ecosystems/biomes in science class (3rd grade science).
  • Children designed their own inventions on paper and then made them out of 3D materials (3rd grade art).
  • Children used Little Bits technology to create a display that read the classroom temperature to help them decide when to turn on the air conditioner and are now creating and designing their own droid (5th grade science).
  • Children are writing personal memoirs after analyzing the comings and goings, major points, themes, and connections in their own lives (5th grade writing).

At OCSI, we want our students to create. We want our students to serve others by creating ideas, products, and solutions. So, we ask our students to…
  1. cartoon-1294877_640Create and refine artworks in both conventional and innovative ways.
  2. Combine ideas.

  4. Produce writing.
  5. Present speeches.
  6. Produce plans, strategies, plays, and routines.
  7. Develop solutions to problems of design, production, and workplace interactions and ethics.

Focusing on helping students communicate truthfully and effectively

OCSI Connections:

OCSI focuses on communication. We focus on helping students communicate truthfully and effectively. It’s good to see:

  • Students listening to devotions on encouraging each other.
  • Pre-K students learning winter vocabulary words.
  • Second graders discussing how to communicate empathy and respect for each other.
  • Fifth graders creating original vocabulary sentences each week before the spelling test.
  • Sixth graders performing a skit based on the 12 resurrection appearances of Jesus.
  • Eighth graders debating human nature, using information from the Bible and The Pearl.
  • High schoolers creating documentaries, using academic vocabulary as they write in their math journals, and programming an Arduino micro-controller.

  • 3/13-16: Accreditation visit: A team of 5 educators (led by Dr. Mohler of ACSI) will read our accreditation report, visit classrooms, look at documents, hold meetings, and identify OCSI’s overall strengths and growth areas.

Please complete re-enrollment (re-registration) by Friday, February 2:

  • Please note that re-enrollment (re-registration) is earlier than last year. This is because we have several classes that are nearing capacity, and we want to help incoming families to be able to apply starting February 5 so they can make informed decisions before the Japanese school year starts in April.
  • Please reserve your seat by February 2 for next school year before new students are admitted (starting February 5). Please come to the office to make payment (8:00-3:30). Please bring your completed re-enrollment form. For further information, please see this lettertuition/fee schedule, and re-enrollment form, all of which were mailed and emailed to you in December.

Music

Road construction: January 30 – mid March, the stretch of road from our front gate to the road at the top of the hill will be closed (see photo, yellow highlights).

  • Parents dropping off their children will need to (A) come up the hill from Route 6 to the front entrance (see blue highlights) or (B) use the back entrance (see blue highlights).
  • Our buses will be parked along the elementary playground. So 8:00 – 845AM, everyone should refrain from using the road between the front drop-off area and the elementary playground. OCSI will post orange cones and provide further directions.

Helping students develop communication skills

Elementary Connections:

We all want our children to become effective and honest communicators, able to express their opinions and desires in kind and loving ways.
At OCSI we also want them to be proficient in writing, reading, listening, and speaking in English. This month has been full of opportunities for your children to develop their communication skills:

  • E9C5FCBF-AD1A-4E33-8CCA-C827A246AE5FChildren are learning winter vocabulary and played karuta (Japanese card game) with winter word cards during circle time (pre-K).

  • Children can receive “share passes” during Writer’s Workshop time, and they get to share their writing with the class and celebrate their progress together (kindergarten).

  • Children are always encouraged to say “please” and “thank you” and to use kind words all the time (kindergarten).

  • Children shared with each other about a special activity they did over Christmas break, and they were asked to use their senses (I saw, I heard, etc.) as they communicated in order to make it more effective (1st grade).

  • Children are consistently discussing how to communicate empathy and respect for each other, in the pursuit of becoming a better team (2nd grade).

  • Children create original vocabulary sentences each week before the spelling test and then get three friends to peer-edit them. They are also learning that being honest is being helpful (5th grade).

Next month, elementary will celebrate the Week of Reading with guest readers, a character parade, Dr. Seuss birthday parties, buddy reading, pajama day, and a 5th grade read-in. We are planning some fun and exciting reading activities for your children here at school, and we hope that you will come celebrate with us at Family Reading Night on March 1. More information about this special week coming soon!

If you’re a preK-2nd grade parent and you’d like to learn how to more effectively read and discuss books at home with your child, please join Mrs. Julie Woolery for her Mother Read class, starting January 25 (2-3 p.m.).
