Annual Report 2019: Head of School (Elementary • Secondary  Business Manager)

Growth! When I think of this school year, I think of growth—student growth, staff growth, and organizational growth:

  • PreK and kindergarten students made letter-sound connections for reading and writing, deepened their understanding of Jesus’ parables, and solved addition and subtraction problems.
  • Elementary students wrote poems and presented them at a poetry slam, gave team presentations to students and parents at Culture Fair, studied the effects of magnetism, properly formatted Google Docs, played guitar, and used correct stroke order for writing in Japanese.
  • Middle school students did 3D printing, learned about Ryukyu Kingdom history, increased their understanding of Jesus and His ministry, participated in a variety of athletic teams, and connected how temperature, pressure, and density affect weather.
  • High school students analyzed diet plans to determine if they are healthy and sustainable, used spreadsheets to complete research projects in math, studied Biblical principles on stewardship, and developed speeches that take into account occasion, audience, and purpose.

AR HS

  • Staff participated in book discussions on The New Art and Science of Teaching, Setting the Standard for Projected Based Learning, and How to Differentiate Instruction in Academically Diverse Classrooms; attended training for child safety, MAP testing, mentoring, and social and emotional learning; and interacted with resources from the 17 professional memberships OCSI holds.
  • Organizationally, OCSI upgraded a variety of things, including playground equipment, bus service, food service, and instructional materials for science.

AR ES

And though OCSI has until 2024 to accomplish the 5 recommendations left by the visiting accreditation team in March 2018, we have already accomplished 3 recommendations by…

  1. Re-evaluating compensation and benefits.
  2. Providing additional support staff to meet the growing needs.
  3. Establishing clear guidelines and deadlines for the completion of curriculum maps.

Thank you for partnering with us as we equip students to walk with Jesus and impact the world for Him. On a personal note, I’m grateful to have been part of the OCSI community over the past 4 years. I will miss being part of OCSI as I head to the US, and I am confident that OCSI will continue to grow.

I’m so excited to look back over a year of growth, both inside and outside the classroom. I’m thankful to be a part of OCSI and the amazing people that make it what it is. As we remember that learning is a journey with a constantly moving target, we are focused on growing all aspects of our students as we equip them to walk with Jesus and impact the world for him.

Spiritual

  • During their time at camp, we had several students commit to follow Jesus. We celebrate their decision and commit to walk alongside them as they continue to grow with him.
  • As always, Service Week (see video) provided an opportunity for our students to love of Jesus all over the island and in a variety of settings.

Academic

  • We continued to use MAP testing in grades 3-9 to monitor student growth in key academic areas. Next year we will extend the use of this tool through 11th grade.
  • Middle school English students had multiple opportunities to show off their products and grow in their written work and presentation skills.
  • Students in chemistry club have been meeting every Friday during their lunch to further explore God’s creation by investigating concepts of chemistry.
  • OCSI held its first college fair with guest professors speaking to students.

OutdoorsB

Social

  • Several high school students participated in an exchange with Ishikawa High School allowing them to grow new friendships and cultural understandings. Our students enjoyed having them on our campus and then visiting their new friends on their campus.
  • Several clubs were added this year to meet the needs and interests of our students. No matter the content of the club, students have been meeting in small groups and connecting with other students and their club sponsors.

Sports and Fine Arts

  • It is always a wonderful thing to watch as our athletic teams grow in skill and character from the first game of the season to the last.
  • The Secondary Christmas Program was a great opportunity to see how our students have developed an grown in the performing arts.
  • The USAF Band of the Pacific performed for an outdoor concert for our students.

  • PreK students reaching out to each other. For example, one student helped another student cut pieces of paper.
  • Kindergarten mathematicians solving addition and subtraction problems.
  • First grade linguists expanding their vocabulary by using action worlds.
  • Second grade authors writing award nominations for their favorite books.
  • Third grade scientists collaborating while working to understand the effects of magnetism.
  • Fourth and 5th grade musicians learning guitar chords.
  • Sixth graders comparing the Biblical beliefs with beliefs of other religions.
  • Seventh grade scientists using microscopes to investigate what living things are made of.
  • Eighth grade artists thinking about how they draw and practicing their techniques.

  • Tenth grade readers learning how to analyze a literary work from different perspectives.
  • High school scientists using concept maps to deepen their understanding of key principles and exploring Greek and Latin in order to master vocabulary.

We’re off to a great start!

Secondary Connections:

We’re off to a great start! Thank you for allowing OCSI to partner with you in your child’s education! If you know others that might be interested in joining the OCSI family, please use the Referral Coupon for a possible tuition discount.

Today is progress report day. Please check your student’s grades online through Jupiter, as paper report cards will no longer be sent home. If you have any issues with your Jupiter login, please let me know.

Our College and Career Counselors, Mr. Suzuki and Mrs. Lopez, have been meeting with student to help them in meeting their post-high school goals. We have already had several universities visit and share with our students. If you are interested in attended college information sessions, please refer to the OCSI calendar for dates.

Dress code is always an issue for students, and I want clarify a couple of things:

  • Skirts/shorts should reach mid-thigh in front and back.
  • Ripped jeans are acceptable as long as no skin is showing. For example: there are tights under them or a patch has been sewn to cover the hole. 3) Skinny jeans, for both boys and girls, must fit in a modest manner. Administration reserves the right to determine if pants are too tight and need to be changed.

There have been a few questions about attendance:

  • If your child needs to leave campus early for any reason, please come to the office and let them know you will be taking your child. The office staff will contact your child’s class and have them sent to the office. Please allow at least 10 minutes for your child to make it to the office after your arrival. Students must check-out in the office, with a parent, before leaving campus. Please keep your student informed, as much as possible, so they can communicate with their teachers about missing class.
  • Students may only miss 7 periods of any class, each quarter, to receive credit. These are any absences that are not school related (excused/unexcused). If your child will be absent for an extended period, please notify the office ahead of time so we are aware and teachers can prepare classwork for you child before leaving. In cases of 8 or more absences, extenuating circumstances will be considered.
  • Please remember that morning supervision does not begin until 8:00 am. In addition, students should be off campus by 3:30 pm.

Students celebrate at promotion ceremonies

At the June 12 kindergarten promotion ceremony, students sang “The Phonics Song,” recited the Lord’s Prayer, sang “First Grade, First Grade,” and received their diplomas.

Also on June 12, the OCSI community celebrated with 5th grade students at their promotion ceremony. Those attending the ceremony enjoyed watching the student processional, listening to three songs and two student speeches, and watching students receive their certificates..

On evening of June 13, the 8th graders celebrated their completion of middle school. The promotion ceremony included a video, speeches from two students and one teacher, and students receiving their certificates.

Annual Report 2018: Secondary (Head of School  Elementary  Business Manager  Board)

It has been a great year of seeing the students working together in and outside of the classroom. The Bible reminds us that by joining together we can achieve much. Ecclesiastes 4:9 states, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.” This year the middle and high school students were blessed to be able to work together in a variety of ways.

Service Week

The middle and high school students worked together by serving others through our 4th year of Service Week. They also learned and worked together through hands on learning activities such as science labs and creating websites. The 7th grade English class also created their own Okinawa magazine!  Students have also grown in their leadership skills and worked as a team through participation in sports, National Honor Society, spirit week activities, and the middle school robotics club. OCSI also became approved members of the National Association for College Admission Counseling. We continue to improve our facilities by renovating the secondary computer lab in order to assist with more hands on learning activities and student collaboration.

This year all middle and high school students as well as teachers also increased their love of learning through reading. Every Thursday afternoon, secondary students Dropped Everything And Read (DEAR) material of their choice for a sustained, silent 25 minutes. The DEAR program supports many positive outcomes—from vocabulary growth, better writing, and understanding of the world, to mental health and the ability to focus, to increased empathy. It has been great to see students and teachers enjoying a good book together.

We will end the school year of celebrating our students by honoring them at the high school graduation on Friday, June 8th at 7:30 pm at the Yomitan Cultural Center and at the the 8th grade graduation on Wednesday, June 13th at 6:00 pm at Sera-en). Thank you to the parents, students, teachers, and staff for a great school year!

Helping students prepare for college, career, and citizenship

OCSI Connections:

We want our students to be prepared for college, career, and citizenship. You might be wondering, “Well, how does OCSI prepare students for that?” Good question! Read on to find out.

College: For some of our students, college is the next step. Last year, for example, 90% of our graduates headed off to college. So, how do we help our students be prepared for college?

Books

Career: When God made the world, He commanded us to take care of it (Gen. 1:28). A key way we take care of God’s creation and impact it for Him is through our careers. Recognizing this, we want to prepare our students for their careers in the 21st Century. Ways we prepare students for career include…

  • Providing career resources.
  • Talking about careers.
  • Helping students achieve our expected student outcomes: understand, think, collaborate, communicate, and create.

Citizenship: We want our students to impact the world for Jesus, and one way they can do that is by being good citizens. So, how do we help our students be good citizens?

  • By helping students learn about history, economics, and government.
  • By encouraging students to be kind, respectful, hardworking, and self-controlled.
  • By giving students opportunities to use their learning to serve others.
  • By helping students improve their communication and collaboration skills.

Speak the Truth in Love

March 13-16 accreditation visit follow up: A team of 5 educators reviewed our accreditation report, visited classes, studied documents, held meetings (with students, parents/guardians, staff, and the board), and gave OCSI 7 major commendations and 5 major recommendations. OCSI is working to incorporate the 5 recommendations into our Schoolwide Action Plan.

We want our students to create ideas, products, solutions

At OCSI we want all of our students to create. Sometimes people hear that word create and think that it is only for artists. Or it is only about the real standouts, like Einstein and Thomas Edison. Or it is only about the sudden “ah-ha!” moments, like the apple on Sir Newton’s head or the lightening bolt on Benjamin Franklin’s kite. Or that it’s something some people have and some don’t.

However, recent research contradicts all of these common myths. We now know that all children have a capacity to create, and that we can nurture that capacity at all levels and in all classes by cultivating curiosity, flexible thinking, imagination, persistence, discipline, collaboration, and self-evaluation.

At OCSI we want our students to create ideas, products, and solutions. And we’re excited that middle school students are doing just that:

  • 6th grade readers responded to a story by creating comics, slideshows, drawings, or inventions.
  • 7th grade geographers taught classmates about the Indian subcontinent. To do this, they created their own lessons plans and solutions to problems they came across as they prepared to teach.
  • 7th grade mathematicians created a work proposal to repaint the basketball courts at Sera-en. They used composite figures and geometry to calculate surface area for paint, and then considered labor and overhead as well.
  • 7th and 8th grade scientists used research to find an unanswered question they are interested in. Next they will create a science fair project to answer it.
  • 8th grade Bible students created a timeline of the book of Acts, visualizing events and drawing them.

In high school…

  • Computer apps students created a new website for Keystone Nazarene Church that addresses each of the needs of the client in creative ways.
  • PE students learned the basics of line dancing and then worked in groups to create their own line dance, which they performed for and taught to their classmates.
  • 10th grade readers and writers created another “book” of The Odyssey where Odysseus lands on Okinawa and the ancient Greeks meet the ancient Ryukyuan people, which is a way to connect local culture into our reading and writing.
  • Biologists created booklets to process their learning about cell structure and function.
  • Bible students created ideas connecting music and Biblical themes. They did this by listening to a series of symphonies and responding in writing and drawing to the question “What effect does music have on inspiration, reflection, joy, or sorrow?”
  • Computer scientists have been combining different sensors (light, temperature, touch) and actuators to create useful tools for automation.
  • 12th grade economists brainstormed a product to create for the market.

Middle School Happenings:

Middle school students are off to a great start!

  • Students were able to participate in some fun last month, as they took part in Spirit Week.
  • Each month, we are focusing on a particular character trait that we hope tosee reflected in our students’ actions. This month, we have been looking for examples of encouragement/positivity. This is a trait that we all need to have!
  • We are preparing to participate in Service Week from February 12 to 16. This is a great opportunity not only to experience serving others, but also to learn outside of the classroom. The teachers, the students, and those that are served are always blessed by this week!

As we continue into the 3rd quarter, students will need to remain focused. We are now halfway through the year!
