Greetings from the PTF

PTF Connections:

Last month, the PTF held its second general meeting. We are very thankful for the parents that were able to attend and provide feedback on our events like Coin War, Holiday Market, and Fall Flea Market. For those who were unable to attend, the link for the presentation is posted on the school website under PTF and in our LINE group.

This month, the school held another Japanese college guidance session. We appreciate all the parents that were able to attend and hope the information was useful. Please feel free to contact Mr. Suzuki and/or Mrs. Lopez for college guidance information.

Also, please remember March 12th is our International College Fair. This is a very important event for our high schoolers, middle schoolers, and parents. We are looking for volunteers to help the event – please contact the office for more info!

College guidance

This week is a very exciting week for the Elementary kids, as it will be Reading Week. The kids will be able to dress up as their favorite characters from books, bring in their favorite books, and share the magic of reading. On Thursday, February 21st at 5:00 – 6:00 pm, Mrs. Woolery, our literacy support teacher, will be hosting Family Reading Night, which will include story time, crafts, and snacks. PTF will be donating new books for this event for kids to take home. Hope to see many friendly faces there!

Flea Market

Next month on the 21st of March during Student-Led Conferences, PTF will be hosting the Spring Flea Market. This is a great opportunity for parents and students to get rid of their used items, find good bargain, and also get experience as sellers and buyers.

  • If you are interested in participating in this event, please email us and submit an application free of charge.
  • If you do not have a table and would rather not be on the ground, simply rent one from us for $5.00 or ¥500.
  • In addition, there will be snacks and drinks for purchase/donations and hopefully some fun games for the kids.
  • Would you like to introduce your business to the rest of OCSI? We will save a table at the Flea Market so bring in your flyers, business cards, coupons, etc. before or on that day so other parents can pick up your information!

If you have any questions, suggestions, comments, or concerns, please email us at ptf@ocsi.org. Please continue to check our Facebook, LINE, and the OCSI website for updates.

Welcome back from Christmas vacation

PTF Connections:

We hope everyone had an amazing break and enjoyed spending time with their families and relaxing. We are pleased to announce the kids hoodies have arrived and the kids love them. We have already sold over seventy percent of our stock, exceeding our expectations. We are grateful for the support of the OCSI families, and we hope everyone enjoys the design and style as much as we do.

On January 14th, 2019, during the classroom observation and kite day, the PTF will be selling our OCSI adult sweatshirts and kid hoodies at the sale price. This special price ends soon, and there is a limited quantity, especially in the kids’ colors and sizes. We plan on submitting an additional order for the kids hoodies. However, we will need parents to submit an order form and payment to ensure the desired color and size as we are not ordering any stock beyond that. This order will be placed next week so please submit all orders as soon as possible as this is the final opportunity to do so.

In addition, please check in with the office for classroom observation day on the 14th of January. Each class has its own time schedule for this event so please ask for your respective grades. It will be a busy day as both secondary and elementary parents will be on campus for this event—so please plan accordingly. We look forward to seeing all our elementary families cooperating together to get their kites in the sky and enjoying the opportunity to observe the secondary and elementary classrooms to see the students’ learning environments.

On January 24th, 2019, from 2:00PM to 3:00PM, the PTF will be hosting its second general meeting. This meeting will review our recent events, provide information about upcoming events, and allow us an opportunity to discuss feedback from these topics for future planning. We also plan to have coffee and snacks so we can have time to relax and meet and greet each other at the beginning of the meeting. We hope everyone can attend and enjoy themselves. If you have any questions, suggestions, comments, or concerns, please email us at ptf@ocsi.org. Please continue to check our Facebook, LINE, or the OCSI website for updates.

Christmas break is here!

Holiday Market

PTF Connections:

Christmas break is here! We hope you enjoy this special time with your kids.

Holiday Market 2

This year’s annual Holiday Market was an amazing, enjoyable family event, exceeding expectations.  A big, heartfelt thank you to the OCSI staff, parents, and students for making this possible. Your participation and assistance made this event not only fun, but also successful in raising ¥165,631. We had a great selection of vendors, offering creative items, and lots of exciting activities for the kids. The mission team was especially instrumental in providing bounce houses for the kids to jump around and offering drinks to families, raising $209.75 and ¥113,541 for their trip to the Philippines.

Bounce House

We have heard your requests for kid sweatshirts and are currently collecting pre-orders to determine the quantities for the sizes and colors. We will be placing this order soon. So, please submit your orders now! In addition, we are having a special holiday sale for sweatshirts, offering 3 for ¥7,000, 2 for ¥5,000, and 1 for ¥2,700.  The PTF shirt is also on sale now for ¥500 and can be found in our mini store in the office.  So be sure to stop by and visit us to get your own OCSI apparel while supplies last.

On January 24th, 2019 from 2:00PM to 3:00PM, we will be having a PTF general meeting. This will be a good opportunity to mingle with other parents, provide feedback on recent events, and learn about upcoming events. If you have any questions, suggestions, comments, or concerns, please email us at ptf@ocsi.org. Please continue to check our Facebook, LINE, or the OCSI website for updates.

PTF Connections:

This month has been an amazing month for our students. Despite the many typhoon interruptions, the PTF held its first coin war, raising over ¥170,000. We would like to thank our students, parents, and teachers for their cooperation in making it such a successful fundraiser, exceeding our expectations. As a result, the ice cream party will be for all students! The winners will receive select prizes from their classroom wish list. For example, the elementary winner, Mr. Logan’s 3.2 Class, has requested beanbag chairs and lamps for the reading corner.

In addition, we will be using these funds to purchase…

  • Science goggles and a variety of indoor board games for the elementary students.
  • For secondary, funds will be given to the mission team to assist in their trip to the Philippines. The secondary winners will also receive fun prizes like homework passes and other prizes, dependent on their teachers.

Screen Shot 2018-10-27 at 3.13.05 PM

We would also like to thank our parents for attending the Japanese college guidance session.  There were more than 30 parents at this event, allowing Mr. Suzuki to explain the updated college information in Japan. This will help secondary students and parents in making informed decisions about their future college plans. We are hoping to plan another college guidance session again to promote awareness of colleges in Japan and around the world.

On November 2nd during parent teacher conferences, the PTF will be hosting a flea market.  This is a great opportunity for parents and students to earn money selling used items. And possibly a chance to get a good bargain! Participation is straightforward and easy—no booth fee or application, instead, simply bring whatever goods you want to sell and do so from 9AM to 12PM. Also, if you do not have a table and would rather not be on the ground, simply rent one from us for $5.00 or ¥500. Many groups will be fundraising for class trips, sports trips, and mission trips. There will also be snacks and drinks for purchase or donation.

Holiday Market

On November 17th, the PTF will host our annual Holiday Market. This will include a selection of local craft artists, international foods, and an outdoor festival for the kids. Details for the outside festival are still in progress; however, we will definitely have a selection of carnival-style games. Therefore, please continue to check our Facebook, LINE, or the OCSI website for updates. And join us for this fun family event. We look forward to seeing you there!

Screen Shot 2018-10-27 at 3.11.06 PM

In addition, we just ordered new OCSI sweatshirts, and they are available for purchase! So, please check them out in our PTF “mini store” in the corner of the front office. We are also selling PTF t-shirts and OCSI towels there.

If you have any questions, suggestions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to email us at ptf@ocsi.org.

Greetings from the PTF!

PTF Connections:

Welcome to a new year at OCSI! The PTF (Parent Teacher Fellowship) is here for YOU. It is a great way to be a part of your student’s life at OCSI. The purpose of the PTF is to connect with other parents, support our teachers and staff, and strengthen our school community. These connections are made by participating in classroom events like field trips and field day and/or PTF events like the Holiday Market, Teacher Appreciation Week, and the Flea Market. Therefore, please join us for an exciting year!!

We would like to thank the parents who attended the general meeting on 7th September and brought such a great amount of treats that we were able to share not only among ourselves but the staff as well. It is so encouraging to see such an impressive amount of our parents so willing to dedicate their time. We are blessed to have such support and look forward to making this year better than the last.

We also appreciate that many parents already submitted the volunteer sign-up sheet. Keep a lookout for emails about upcoming volunteer opportunities to connect, as we are sorting through an amazing amount of responses from the volunteer forms. So, thank you for taking the time and effort to fill out these forms.

This month, on September 24th, there will be a Japanese college guidance meeting, in which Mr. Suguki will be sharing important information concerning Japanese colleges. Then starting September 26th, Mr. Roe will be hosting an English conversation class every Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. In addition, every Friday from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm Mrs. Roe will also be hosting a parenting class. This a great opportunity to improve and develop English language skills while also gaining insights into Biblical parenting values.

Thank you!

PTF Connections:

teacherappriciation1Hello, parents!

Thank you again for showing your appreciation to our teachers and staff in many ways in the last month! Teachers were moved by so many presents and heart-warming cards from the students. The potluck was filled with plenty of delicious food and sweets—more than ever! It was so great that the teachers and staff did not even know which food to start with.

Now, the school year is coming to the end. Every school year, PTF awards scholarships to 2 senior students. Application acceptance has started for this school year. The scholarships will be awarded to 2 students based on their essays. The winners are to be announced later. We also plan to prepare senior breakfast on graduation morning.

PTF’s Bible study classes are also being held every week.  In the Thursday morning class from 9:00 to 10:00, Mr. Roe breaks down the Old Testament with simple explanations. In the Friday afternoon class from 13:30 to 15:00, Mrs. Roe gives us guidance for parenting from a biblical perspective in English.  If you are interested, please come and join us!  (There is no Bible study class on Thursday, May 24.)

It has been wonderful for me to see so many parents help at recent school activities such as Kid City, Field Day, and Junior/Senior Banquet. Thank you for your support for your children and our school community!

Thank you to all the parents who have served as class parents and helped with classroom events throughout the school year! Thank you also to all the parents who helped for Holiday Market in November. The Holiday Market is a special event for our school community to come together and celebrate the unique talents in our school and island community. Your involvement in these events makes a difference in your child(ren)’s education, and we appreciate you!

teacherappriciation2Additionally, a very special thank you to our PTF Committee of 2017 – 2018!  These parents met regularly throughout the school year to plan and organize all the PTF events, and very little would have happened without their service and commitment. Thank you, Takako Manzaki, Carrie Young, Kiomi Novak, Ryoko Sharpe, Fumino Gosh, Mizuho Takanashi, Weiling Kline, and Jen Friebel! Thank you for the privilege of working with you to help our school community!

We are sad to announce that Mrs. Manzaki and Mrs. Young are leaving after this school year.  Mrs. Manzaki has served with PTF for 7 years, and she will be leaving as her daughter is graduating from OCSI this year. Mrs. Young  has served for 2 years, but it’s time for her family to PCS to Hawaii. THANK YOU, Mrs. Manzaki and Mrs. Young, for all your dedication and hard work over the years!

  • PTF is looking for parents and guardians to help with our activities for the next school year.
  • If you are interested, please contact us at ptf@ocsi.org.

Have a wonderful summer, and I look forward to seeing you next school year!

Flea market, parenting seminar, cooking class, and more!

PTF Connections:

PTF Flea Market: On March 21, 2018, PTF held its first Flea Market filled with many visitors despite the change of location from the soccer field to the cathedral and hallway, due to the strong wind. We appreciate all the participants for joining us!

We had booths of games, face painting and nail art, and snacks and coffee, as well as some personal items sold by OCSI parents. Students enjoyed the event by selling items with their families, running the game booths, and making pompons.

Parenting Seminar: On April 13, 2018, a parenting seminar was held with the guest speaker, Mr. Koji Kaneko from Family Forum Japan. What is the most essential in parenting? In this seminar, Mr. Kaneko talked about the necessity for the parents to interact with their children as their coaches. We appreciate many parents for attending the seminar!

Nepali Cooking Class: OCSI parents, Shanti and Narayan showed the participants how to cook three kinds of Nepalese home-style cooking: Nepalese Salad, Chicken Biryani, and Shrimp Coconut Curry. All these dishes were cooked with a lot of spices, and the participants loved how delicious they were! Thank you, Shanti and Narayan, for showing us how to cook delicious Nepalese cuisine!

Teacher Appreciation Week: April 24 – 26, 2018, is Teacher Appreciation Week! This is an event to show our appreciation to the teachers and office staff for their daily hard work. On April 24, 2018, give them small gifts such as chocolates, drinks, or some stationery.  On April 25, 2018, give thank-you cards to your teachers. On April 26, 2018, bring a food dish for the teachers and office staff for their brunch. Salads and desserts would be great to bring as well as staple foods.

  • Foods purchased from grocery stores would be also wonderful. Please bring your dish to the office at any time from the morning until the afternoon. You can also send the food with your child(ren). In that case, please tell your child(ren) to bring it to the office.
  • The purpose of this event is to show our appreciation to the teachers and staff for their everyday work. You can participate in the event by doing whatever you feel comfortable with. You are not required to participate for the whole 3 days.
  • Thank you, teachers, for always loving our children!

PTF questionnaires, Korean cooking class, and more!

PTF Connections:

Questionnaires: Thank you all for answering our questionnaires for the school in February! We are grateful to receive answers from many parents and guardians! The questionnaire results showed that many parents and guardians are satisfied with OCSI school events. We also appreciate your gratitude and comments to the school! OCSI will make the best use of your answers to school events.

IMG_20180224_115310_resized_20180312_103250869Korean Cooking Class: Mrs. Kuboyama (grade 6 mother) demonstrated Korean cooking on Saturday, February 24.  She made Korean pancakes and japchae (Korean bean noodles).  They are so yummy.  All of parents and kids enjoyed learning how to cook and to eat.  Thank you so much, Mrs. Kuboyama. We will plan another cooking class in April. Please check it out!

Reading Night: The Reading Night on March 1st was a blast with many participants! Everyone enjoyed a storybook performed by teachers, craft-making, and receiving a present of a picture book! PTF also provided drinks and popcorn for the students, and donated the gifted books. We hope this event helps our children learn to love reading. It was such a great time filled with our children’s happy smiles.

PTF Flea Market: PTF is accepting applications for the Flea Market to be held on Wednesday, March 21. If you are having trouble getting rid of unwanted items, please feel free to sign up!

PTF is also looking for parents and guardians to help us with games in our kids corner.  Would you be interested in managing a game in the corner for an hour? Please email us at ptf@ocsi.org for an application.  If you are interested in having your own booth, please include your name and what you would be selling at the event. If you are interested in helping us at our kids corner, please include your name and the time you can help us (e.g., 9:00 – 10:00 am). We are accepting your applications on our Facebook as well. We look forward to receiving your applications!

Week of ReadingJoin the fun!
  • OCSI has received new indoor and outdoor recess supplies purchased by PTF for the elementary students. We hope that these supplies will make students’ recess time even more fun!
  • We appreciate applications from parents for the Mother Read class!  This fun class by Mrs. Woolery will be filled with laughter and help you enjoy reading with your child(ren) in English.
  • PTF will host a cooking class of Korean cuisine from 11:30 to 13:30 on Saturday, February 24.  Please email us at ptf@ocsi.org for application or inquiry.  We will accept 12 participants on a first come, first served basis. The application acceptance will start on February 10 at 9 a.m. We look forward to receiving your application!
  • Family Reading Night is scheduled to be held from 17:00 to 18:00 on March 1st, and PTF will also support this event.  Please join us in having a fun time with your child(ren)!
Would you like to share your opinion with our school? PTF will prepare questionnaires so you can share your thoughts about school events and other topics of the past 6 months of the school year.  Let’s share as many opinions as possible with the school to help OCSI continue growing!  The questionnaires will be sent in your elementary child’s Friday folder this week and available via Jupiter mail for secondary parents. Your cooperation will be appreciated!
March 21st is conference day, and PTF is planning to host a flea market that day. Last year, OCSI decided not to host Bazaar anymore. If you have any un-used items at home, why don’t you sell them at this event?  You can sell handmade products with your family, or hosting a game corner would be interesting, too. The details are to be announced later, so please stay tuned.
Please also check out PTF Facebook page for updated event information.

Holiday Market update

PTF Connections:

cached1673579601Poster contest: We had so many wonderful posters for the poster contest at Holiday Market! Thank you so much!  It was really a hard decision to pick the winners. We finally managed to choose eight winners, one from each grade (PK3 – 5th grade).  We are so proud of all the elementary children who participated in the contest—they are so talented and creative.

Holiday Market: Thank you so much for visiting the Holiday Market on November 11. It was the first time for the Holiday Market to be joined with the Walkathon.  The weather was just perfect to walk or run, and many parents and students visited the Holiday Market after Walkathon. It was so much fun to see so many kinds of food and crafts in the vendors’ shops.

I appreciated it so much that we had new vendors from among OCSI students this year with their parents. Their booths were so popular because many students enjoyed crafting with friends at their booths. The youngest vendor was a 2nd grade student. After the event she donated her profits to OCSI. Thank you for joining Holiday Market with your families, and please join again as a vendor to use your gifts and creativity!

Many groups such as the OCSI Saipan Mission Trip Team, cheerleaders, the Junior Class, Service Club, and the 5th grade parents also joined as vendors for fundraising. PTF was able to raise ¥140,000 that will be used for elementary school supplies for recess time. We also had many donations for the raffle, and many PTF vendors helped on that day.

I also want to say thank you to the many parents, teachers, and students that helped this event happen… without their help it could not have happened!

Many classes will have a Christmas party next week, so be looking for information from your class parent or homeroom teacher. Helping with events is a great way to support our teachers and students, and it gives us opportunities to connect with other parents.

Thank you always for your support for our school community, and merry Christmas!
