Annual Report 2019: Secondary (Head of SchoolElementary Business Manager)

I’m so excited to look back over a year of growth, both inside and outside the classroom. I’m thankful to be a part of OCSI and the amazing people that make it what it is. As we remember that learning is a journey with a constantly moving target, we are focused on growing all aspects of our students as we equip them to walk with Jesus and impact the world for him.

Spiritual

  • During their time at camp, we had several students commit to follow Jesus. We celebrate their decision and commit to walk alongside them as they continue to grow with him.
  • As always, Service Week (see video) provided an opportunity for our students to love of Jesus all over the island and in a variety of settings.
Our students attend our International College Fair in March.

Academic

  • We continued to use MAP testing in grades 3-9 to monitor student growth in key academic areas. Next year we will extend the use of this tool through 11th grade.
  • Middle school English students had multiple opportunities to show off their products and grow in their written work and presentation skills.
  • Students in chemistry club have been meeting every Friday during their lunch to further explore God’s creation by investigating concepts of chemistry.
  • OCSI held its first college fair with guest professors speaking to students.

OutdoorsB

Social

  • Several high school students participated in an exchange with Ishikawa High School allowing them to grow new friendships and cultural understandings. Our students enjoyed having them on our campus and then visiting their new friends on their campus.
  • Several clubs were added this year to meet the needs and interests of our students. No matter the content of the club, students have been meeting in small groups and connecting with other students and their club sponsors.
Secondary students perform during their December 7 Christmas program.

Sports and Fine Arts

  • It is always a wonderful thing to watch as our athletic teams grow in skill and character from the first game of the season to the last.
  • The Secondary Christmas Program was a great opportunity to see how our students have developed an grown in the performing arts.
  • The USAF Band of the Pacific performed for an outdoor concert for our students.

Thank you for sharing your child with us!

Sincerely,
Brynn Childers, secondary principal

Using service projects to help students grow strong in the Lord

One way we help our students grow strong in the Lord is by involving them in service projects like cleaning up beaches and churches, visiting nursing homes, using the fine arts to share the Gospel, engaging OCSI elementary students in music and sports, and more!

Thanks for praying:

  • Praise God that Service Week went well.
  • Ask God to work in the hearts of our students and the hearts of those with whom our students interacted during Service Week.

Thanks for being involved in God’s work in Japan!

Sincerely,
Michael B. Essenburg, head of school

We want our students to learn about Jesus

We want our students to learn about Jesus! So, we provide Christian teachers, teach the Bible, and go to camp—check out the video! One elementary teacher shared, “Four of the students in my cabin said they had not ever made decisions for Christ yet and weren’t ready to pray with me at the time, but were doing much reflection as our speaker shared about the different soils.”

Please…

  • Pray that these 4 students would follow Jesus.
  • Pray that God will use high school camp (September 24-26) to work in students’ hearts.
  • Praise God that 9 elementary students are attending a lunchtime Bible study.

Thanks for being involved in God’s work in Japan!

Sincerely,

Elementary in action

Elementary Connections:

Merry Christmas! It was so wonderful to see all of your children performing in the Christmas program last week, and I’m looking forward to the PreK and kinder program this Friday. We really do have such talented students here at OCSI. We would like to say thank you for partnering with us in the education of your children. I am so grateful for a school community that supports each other and partners with teachers to do what’s best for student learning.

Want to see what a typical morning at school looks like for your child? On January 8, we would like to invite you to campus for Kite Day celebrations and to spend time observing in your child’s classroom.

We are excited to be able to offer after school clubs for our elementary students in kindergarten (K5) through 5th grade beginning from January 23. We know that providing extra-curricular opportunities are important to families, and we hope that you will find a club that interests your child. A big thank you to the teachers who have volunteered to lead these clubs!

Secondary music students do radio theater

Secondary music students performed a radio-theater version of A Christmas Carol, complete with dramatic readings, sound effects, and songs like “We Need a Little Christmas, “Carol of the Bells,” and “You Are the Savior of the World.”

Said Don Reasoner, music teacher, “I am proud of how the students worked together to put on this production.”

We want more and more people to know Jesus

In Japan, few know Jesus. So it’s exciting to hear the testimony of a fellow Christian. Check out the video!

OCSI, we want our students to know Jesus. So…

  • We provide Christian teachers, Bible class and chapel, and biblical integration across the curriculum.
  • We focus on helping students understand God/His world and to think Biblically.

And God is blessing His work! For example, a student (who last year shared that he wasn’t a Christian) now shares that God plays a role in our world. And 2 students recently accepted Jesus into their hearts.

Thanks for praying:

  • Praise God for providing a middle school math/science teacher.
  • Praise God that parents are attending a Bible study on parenting.
  • Ask God to provide a bus driver.
Thanks for being involved in God’s work in Japan.

Sincerely,
Michael B. Essenburg, superintendent
